Dean's Dad's Ducks
I am currently developing a one man show - Dean's Dad's Ducks, which I'll be taking to the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2010 as part of the Escalator East to Edinburgh scheme. The show revolves around the story of the consignment of 30,000 of my Dad's plastic ducks (he was a toymaker) which sunk in the North Pacific in 1992 after their cargo ship was bombed by a US fighter jet (friendly fire). It also contains the shorter everyday journeys happening back home - accidental hitchhiking, lemon trees on trains and the danger of Murraymints, told in poems, stories and with some sonic tinkerings along the way...
The show was developed as part of the Escalator Live Literature Scheme in 2008-09, during which I received mentorship from one of Radio 4's Saturday Live poets Matt Harvey and worked with the director, James Grieve. The climax of the scheme was a showcase event - along with the four award-winning poets - at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival in May 2009.
In late 2009 I won a place on the Escalator East to Edinburgh scheme to take the show to the Fringe. In March 2010 I started working with my director Paul Warwick (of the China Plate Theatre) - more details to follow. I will also be relaunching the Dean's Dad's Ducks blog shortly...
